The Cardiac Intervention Necessity Assessment (CINA) provides health care organizations a specific, unbiased means to evaluate the medical necessity and appropriateness of PCI procedures performed at their facilities.

Over 1,000,000 PCI procedures are performed every year in the U.S. costing billions of dollars and posing an increased risk of complications and mortality. Led by interventional cardiologist, Robert Duerr, MD FACC, on behalf of MDReview, CINA is an independent, external peer review utilizing well-accepted criteria in clearly establishing the clinical necessity of PCI. CINA can enable health care organizations to confidently offer the safest, highest quality of care for their patients while reducing the occurrence, risk and cost of unnecessary procedures.

Specific evidence-based criteria determined by leaders in academic medicine in alignment with the American College of Cardiology Foundation Appropriateness Criteria Task Force’s Appropriateness Criteria for Coronary Revascularization form the foundation of MDReview’s CINA program. Applied within MDReview’s unique and proven peer review process by its carefully selected team of interventional cardiologists, these criteria are used to evaluate each patient’s medical record to determine whether or not the procedure was appropriate.

The results of MDReview’s CINA can be used for the examination of individual or group practice patterns, as well as for the planning and implementation of improvement initiatives and educational programs.
